Thirty four buildings. Tens of generations. Memories that precede roads, indoor plumbing, and two world wars. The finest of early 20th century brick and wood buildings. Civic buildings and private residences. Alas, no outdoor biffies to sniffle while reflecting on "the good old days". Who in the world reading this might remember the name of the piece of equipment that came to collect the "biffy" stuff? If you guessed "honey wagon", you're right! Who might know that Okotoks was contained between the river and the north escarpment until the late 1970s?
The Okotoks and District Historical Society, in partnership with the Town, created the Heritage Walking Tour which is a visual acknowledgement of our town’s history. Interpretive signs have been installed in 34 locations in Okotoks, concentrated on Elma Street, McRae Street, North Railway Street, Elizabeth Street and Riverside Drive.
Pick-up a walking tour brochure at the Okotoks Art Gallery or the Okotoks Museum and Archives and imagine what life was like in a community much different than today. We should be proud of our history. We must all work hard to understand our foundation while building new stories contained within new walls. Take a walk - your heart will be glad for it. The Okotoks Museum and Archives also offers guided Heritage Walking Tours during the summer season. Please call 403-938-8969 for dates.
